Mount Vernon, Wash. — Mount Vernon boys’ soccer put on a show at Bulldog Stadium on Saturday afternoon against the Sehome Mariners, thanks to an outstanding performance from Edgar Serrano. He netted three goals in 30 minutes to help the Bulldogs to a 4-2 win on Senior Night. The Bulldogs are now 9-0-0 while the Mariners drop to 5-2-1.
Serrano’s hat-trick was the team’s third this week and helped the Bulldogs claw back from a 1-0 deficit and gave the team enough insurance to hold on to defeat the Mariners, who clawed back another goal in the 77th minute.
Sehome opened the scoring in the 8th minute when the Mariners could dispossess Mount Vernon and counter quickly. Ethan Krebs got on the end of a loose ball inside Mount Vernon’s 18-yard box that Jose Batista could not save. It was the Mariners’ first attempt on goal, and they made it count.
The Bulldogs equalized four minutes later. Serrano looked to break away from two Sehome defenders at the top of the box before being brought down for a penalty kick. He did not concede penalty kick duties this time around and trusted himself to pull the Bulldogs even.
In the 27th minute, Serrano struck again. Serrano got on the end of the poor defensive clearance and did not hesitate to blast a half-volley past the Sehome goalkeeper for the turn-around goal.
Eight minutes later, in the 35th minute, the Bulldogs extended their lead to 3-1. Senior Bridger Tautvydas continued his scoring streak from Tuesday night and volleyed home an assist from fellow senior Kyler Houck. The fans went crazy, and Tautvydas and co. added fuel to the fire with a rowboat celebration.
The Bulldogs took a 3-1 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Bulldogs picked up where they left off. They came out firing on all cylinders, and Serrano recorded his hat-trick off an Angel Jimenez assist. Everything Serrano touched was gold.
From this moment on, the Bulldogs controlled and dictated the game. They continued to create opportunities, but great saves by the Sehome keeper kept them to four goals on the night.
Sehome would get one more opportunity in the dying minutes of the second half, and they made it count. Ethan Krebs slipped into the box, unmarked, and netted from close range for his second of the night. MV goalkeeper, Alan Ruiz, was helpless and conceded only his third goal of the season.
The Bulldogs outshot the Mariners 18-4.
On Monday evening, the Bulldogs will seek perfection. Mount Vernon will host the Bellingham Raiders (7-0-2) at 7 p.m. in a battle of undefeated programs. Come out and support the Dawgs in their last game of the season.
